WHY CONTRIBUTE TRIP LOGS
Newtracs works by users submitting 4wd trip logs to our database. We then analyze them to infer the condition and difficulty of 4wd tracks automatically. In this way, the Newtracs database stays current the collective 4wd community can benefit from this shared information.
SUBMITTING TRIP LOGS VIA THE NEWTRACS iOS APP
If you have an iPhone or iPad submitting trip logs is easy. Simply download the Newtracs iOS app, create an account or login, complete a vehicle profile and log your trip (Click "Log trip" on the main map screen). All trips logged via the Newtracs app are automatically synced and uploaded to the Newtracs database to help assess track information.
Please note as we are still migrating to our new login system, logins created on this website will not work on the app - you will need to create a new login in app. You can use the same login credentials.
SUBMITTING TRIP LOGS MANUALLY (ANDROID USERS)
If you do not use iOS devices, you can still record and contribute logs manually following instructions below. The Newtracs team is currently developing an Android version of the app to make logging trips easier and is due for release early 2020.
There is no need to edit or tailor your journey in any way - we can filter out sealed roads, non-4wd roads, etc from your trip logs when processed.
We prefer trip logs to be submitted in GPX format - most common GPS tracking apps can do this. See below for some examples of free apps you can use.
Users of OziExplorer format files (OZFx) can also submit trip logs but we will need to convert these prior to processing.
RECORDING TRIP LOGS WITHOUT THE NEWTRACS iOS APP (ANDROID USERS)
Log your 4wd trips using any 3rd party app that allows exporting of route data to GPX format. Examples include the Tracks Logger app for iPhone / iPad or the GPS Logger app for Android. See links to these free apps below:
Track Logger (iPhone/iPad): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tracks-logger/id849620385?mt=8
GPS Logger (Android): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger&hl=en
Trip logs with a high frequency of GPS Tracking (e.g. 1 point per second) are better for processing and allow for more accurate track assessments.
Please note we are not affiliated in any way with the above applications. Users may use any application to collect GPS data as long as the format is GPX (e.g. most HEMA apps will do this). Users of OziExplorer format files can also submit trip logs but we will need to convert these prior to processing.
Note that logging trips via GPS will impact the battery life of your device - please ensure your device is charging whilst recording.
LOGS MADE WITH DIFFERENT CARS AND/OR MODIFICATIONS (ANDROID USERS)
As we are currently accepting contributions of trip logs from any time period, often old trip logs sitting on your device will have been made with either a different car to the one you have now, or the same car with different modifications (e.g. with smaller tyres). This is important to clarify when submitting logs as we use your vehicle information when assessing track grades.
If you have trip logs made with different vehicles please send logs in separate emails specifying which vehicle was used and their modifications. We will take these differences into account when processing your track logs.
Note that when recording logs via the Newtracs iOS app, even though you do not need to re-add your vehicle details each time you log a trip, make sure you revisit your profile regularly to ensure it is current.
SUBMIT LOGS MADE OUTSIDE THE NEWTRACS iOS APP (ANDROID USERS)
Please ensure you have signed up and created a member profile via this website (if not click "Login" at the top of this page). You will also need to complete your member profile in full (including the vehicle details and vehicle modifications pages) to allow us to properly configure the data you provide.
Your data will be processed and added to the database. You will be able to see results of the assessment of your trip logs on the track map. Note this is a manual process and make take a few days.
